How Much Bedding Should I Put In My Hamster Cage?

Providing your hamster with a comfortable and healthy living environment is essential for their well-being. Proper bedding is a key component in achieving this, as it serves various important purposes.

Hamsters are natural burrowers, and adequate bedding allows them to express this instinctual behavior. Digging and burrowing provide mental stimulation and physical exercise, contributing to their overall health and happiness. Additionally, bedding helps absorb moisture, control odor, and provides insulation, keeping the hamster warm and dry.

The amount of bedding you provide should be sufficient to meet these needs. Generally, a depth of 6-8 inches is recommended. This depth allows for proper burrowing and nesting, while also providing enough absorption for moisture and odor control.

When selecting the type of bedding, choose one that is soft, absorbent, and dust-free. Avoid using materials like cedar or pine, as these can release harmful fumes that can irritate the hamster's respiratory system. Some commonly used and suitable bedding options include:

  • Aspen shavings: Soft, absorbent, and relatively inexpensive.
  • Paper-based bedding: Made from shredded paper, it is soft, easy to burrow in, and minimizes odor.
  • Hemp bedding: Highly absorbent, biodegradable, and relatively dust-free.
  • Coconut fiber: Natural, biodegradable, and odor-absorbent. It can be more expensive than other options.

Keep in mind that bedding should be replaced regularly to maintain its effectiveness and prevent the buildup of bacteria and odor. Spot-clean the cage daily by removing soiled areas, and replace the entire bedding at least once a week.

By providing an appropriate amount of suitable bedding, you can ensure your hamster has a comfortable, hygienic, and stimulating environment to thrive in.
