What Age Do Babies Have Bedding?

Welcoming a new baby into the world is an exciting time, and preparing their nursery is a big part of that. One of the most important aspects of creating a safe and comfortable sleep environment for your little one is choosing the right bedding. But when it comes to bedding, there are a few things to keep in mind, including the age of your baby.

Bedding for Newborns

For newborns, it's best to keep the crib as simple as possible. This means no pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies sleep on a firm mattress with a fitted sheet only. This is because loose bedding can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Transitioning to Bedding

As your baby gets older, you can start to introduce bedding into the crib. However, it's important to do this gradually and safely. Here are some guidelines:

  • Around 12 months of age, you can add a lightweight blanket to the crib. Make sure the blanket is small enough that it can't cover your baby's head, and tuck it in tightly around the mattress.
  • At about 18 months of age, you can add a pillow to the crib. The pillow should be small and firm, and it should be placed at the head of the crib.
  • Stuffed animals and other soft toys should not be placed in the crib until your baby is at least 2 years old.

It's important to remember that every baby is different, and some may be ready for bedding sooner or later than others. Always follow your doctor's recommendations and use your best judgment when it comes to adding bedding to your baby's crib.

Other Safety Tips

In addition to choosing the right bedding, there are a few other things you can do to create a safe sleep environment for your baby:

  • Place your baby on their back to sleep every time.
  • Use a firm mattress that is free of dust mites and allergens.
  • Keep the room temperature between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Avoid smoking or vaping in the bedroom.
  • Never co-sleep with your baby.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your baby gets the safe and restful sleep they need.
