Define The Graded Bedding

Graded bedding is a type of bedding deposit in which the grain size decreases upwards. This can be caused by a number of processes, such as the settling of sediment in a body of water or the weathering of a rock. Graded bedding can provide information about the environment in which it was formed.

The three main essential aspects of graded bedding are:

  1. Grain size
  2. Sorting
  3. Orientation

Grain size is the diameter of the particles that make up the bedding. Sorting is the degree to which the particles are of a similar size. Orientation is the way the particles are arranged within the bedding.

Graded bedding can be used to interpret the environment in which it was formed. For example, graded bedding in a river deposit indicates that the river was flowing in a relatively fast and turbulent environment. Graded bedding in a beach deposit indicates that the beach was a relatively calm and quiet environment.

Graded bedding is a common feature in sedimentary rocks. It can be used to interpret the environment in which the rocks were formed and to understand the geological history of an area.
