Meaning of Bedding Planes

  • Graded bedding: Graded bedding is a type of bedding in which the grain size of the sediment decreases from the bottom of the bed to the top. This type of bedding forms when sediment is deposited from a suspension.

The different types of bedding planes can provide information about the depositional environment of the sediment. For example, horizontal bedding planes indicate that the sediment was deposited in a calm, low-energy environment. Inclined bedding planes indicate that the sediment was deposited on a slope.
